VERTICAL GARDEN Project INTRODUCTION ABOUT the Project PROJECT and PICTURE JOURNAL PRESS COVERAGE TO TOP OF PAGE |
The 1997 theme was Growing Back to the Future The Winter Garden Show is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of horticulture, landscape design and the attendant educational and environmental issues. The Winter Garden Show provides a theatre in which the professional and the amateur are simultaneously players and spectators, presenting and exploring a myriad of natural wonders. The Show is committed to the highest standards in beauty and design. The Winter Garden is a major component of the Royal and has become an important feature of the program since it was repositioned in 1991. In that year two of the Royal's volunteers, Nicole Eaton and Hilary Weston, stepped forward with a completely new approach for the event and move it from a traditional "flower show" to its present status. Chaired by Thomas W. Sparling, landscape architect and Ryerson Polytechnic Professor, the Gardens and exhibits are organized by volunteers. In 1997 AESTHETICS+DESIGN was invited to design and coordinate one of the seven sponsored gardens at the fair, The Vertical Garden. ABOUT
THE VERTICAL GARDEN PROJECT Project INTRODUCTION ABOUT THE PROJECT PROJECT and PICTURE JOURNAL PRESS COVERAGE TO TOP OF PAGE |
THE VERTICAL GARDENThe Vertical Garden had a planting surface of 900 sq.ft. exhibiting 6000 annuals and 1000 vegetable plants on a footprint of only 50 sq.ft. The garden was constructed of over 100 modular 27" high containers, some staked 4 high. In actual fact, it was a giant hydroponic wall. Each container was filled with a patented soil-less growing medium requiring the plants to be fed with nutrient laden water. The product was originally developed to aid in food production for areas of either poor soil quality or water scarcity. By maximizing this system, food production can be increased by 3 to 20 times with only 1/10th to 1/20th the water consumption when compared to conventional two-dimensional gardening methods. The containers come in various shapes and sizes and are very useful for small gardens or apartment balconies. If you were able to visit the Royal and saw The Vertical Garden, please e-mail us your comments. Thank you. |
